Softcover photo books have a reputation problem. Most people associate the format with the thin, floppy books from drugstore kiosks — pages that yellow within a year, spines that crack after a few reads, colours that look nothing like the originals.
That's not what we make at PhotoBook Press.
Our softcover books are printed on premium silk stock with a glossy cover finish, hand-checked at our Upper Marlboro, Maryland facility before they ship. The cover is flexible. The quality isn't a compromise.
This guide covers what our softcover books are actually made of, how they compare to our other binding options, and what to think about when you're designing yours.
What you get with a PhotoBook Press softcover book
Our softcover photo books use a premium silk paper stock for the interior pages — the same paper weight and finish we use across our professional range. Pages are printed in full colour with a glossy cover that holds up to regular handling.
Four sizes are available:
8.5 x 8.5" — from $13.99
8 x 10" — from $15.99
10 x 8" — from $15.99
12 x 12" — from $29.99
Extra pages are available at $0.65–$1.00 per page depending on size. See our softcover photo book pricing page for the full breakdown.
Every book starts at 20 pages. The flexible PUR binding is engineered to hold through regular use — the adhesive flexes with the book rather than against it, which is why the spine doesn't crack the way cheaper bindings do.
Softcover vs hardcover vs layflat — when to choose each
The right binding depends on what the book is for and how it'll be used.
Choose softcover when:
The book will be handled often and passed around. Annual family yearbooks, travel journals, client proof books, graduation gifts, and professional portfolios all suit the softcover format. It's lighter than hardcover, more portable, and at a price point where ordering multiple copies for family members is practical. Our softcover books start at $13.99 — our most accessible option without sacrificing print quality.
Choose hardcover when:
The book is meant to stay in one place. A family history, a formal gift, something that lives on a shelf and gets brought out for special occasions. Our hardcover photo books offer a rigid cover and more substantial feel for projects where permanence matters more than portability.
Choose layflat when:
Your images span both pages of a spread. Layflat binding uses thick, rigid pages mounted back-to-back — the book opens completely flat with no gutter through the centre of your photos. Wedding ceremonies, landscapes, panoramic group shots — anything where a crease through the middle of the image would be a problem. See our layflat photo books for details.
The most common scenario where people pick the wrong format is graduation gifts. Softcover is almost always the better choice — easier to carry, affordable enough to order one for each family member, and the print quality is identical.
Designing your softcover book — the practical details
Resolution: Use images at 300 DPI minimum at the size they'll be printed. Lower resolution files look fine on screen but show visible pixelation on paper. Our design tool flags images that don't meet the minimum before you submit.
The gutter margin: Softcover binding has a natural curve where the pages meet the spine. Keep a 0.5-inch inner margin on both pages to protect important content from the curve. Faces, horizon lines, and any text should sit outside this safe zone. Our design tool shows this boundary clearly before you finalise your layout.

Bleed: Extend background images and colour fills 0.125 inches beyond the trim line on all outer edges. This prevents white slivers appearing at the page edge if the cut is slightly off. Images that don't reach the edge don't need bleed.
Spine text: You can add personalised text to the spine once your book reaches the minimum page count for a printable spine surface. Title, date, and volume number are the most common choices — useful for a series of annual family books stored on a shelf.
Sequencing: A good photo book has a narrative arc, not just a collection of images. Chronological ordering works well for events and travel. Thematic ordering lets you make more creative connections. Use full-page hero images to mark significant moments and multi-photo grids to provide context and detail around them.
Made in Maryland
Every softcover book we make is produced at our facility at 501 Prince Georges Blvd, Upper Marlboro, Maryland — not outsourced to a third-party printer. Our team has been producing custom printed books since 1985.
That matters for consistency. The same team, the same equipment, the same quality checks on every order. We manually inspect each book before it ships. We print on demand, which means your book is made fresh for your order — not pulled from warehouse stock.
We ship to the United States and Canada. Production takes 3–5 business days from order confirmation.

Frequently asked questions
What paper does PhotoBook Press use for softcover books?
Our softcover books are printed on premium silk stock — the same professional paper grade we use across our photo book range. Pages are printed in full colour with vivid, accurate colour reproduction.
What sizes are available?
We offer softcover photo books in four sizes: 8.5x8.5", 8x10", 10x8", and 12x12". Starting prices range from $13.99 to $29.99. See our softcover pricing page for full details including extra page pricing.
How many pages can a softcover book have?
Our softcover books start at 20 pages. Extra pages can be added at $0.65–$1.00 per page depending on size.
What finish is the cover?
The cover is printed with a gloss finish, which gives it a professional, clean look and holds up well to regular handling.
Will my photos fade?
We use professional-grade inks and quality paper stock as standard. Kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity, your book should remain colour-accurate for many years. Fading in our books almost always results from exposure to direct sunlight rather than the materials themselves.
What's the difference between softcover and layflat?
Softcover has a flexible cover and a traditional adhesive spine — the pages curve slightly toward the spine when open. Layflat uses rigid mounted pages that open completely flat with no gutter. If your images span both pages and need to be uninterrupted, choose layflat. For single-page layouts and most personal projects, softcover is the better value.
How do I keep images away from the spine?
Maintain a 0.5-inch inner margin on both pages. Our design tool marks this zone clearly. Keep faces, text, and important details outside this margin.
Do you offer professional discounts?
