Every book starts at 20 pages. The flexible PUR binding is engineered to hold through regular use — the adhesive flexes with the book rather than against it, which is why the spine doesn't crack the way cheaper bindings do.
Softcover vs hardcover vs layflat — when to choose each
The right binding depends on what the book is for and how it'll be used.
Choose softcover when:
The book will be handled often and passed around. Annual family yearbooks, travel journals, client proof books, graduation gifts, and professional portfolios all suit the softcover format. It's lighter than hardcover, more portable, and at a price point where ordering multiple copies for family members is practical. Our softcover books start at $13.99 — our most accessible option without sacrificing print quality.
Choose hardcover when:
The book is meant to stay in one place. A family history, a formal gift, something that lives on a shelf and gets brought out for special occasions. Our hardcover photo books offer a rigid cover and more substantial feel for projects where permanence matters more than portability.
Choose layflat when:
Your images span both pages of a spread. Layflat binding uses thick, rigid pages mounted back-to-back — the book opens completely flat with no gutter through the centre of your photos. The most common scenario where people pick the wrong format is graduation gifts. Softcover is almost always the better choice — easier to carry, affordable enough to order one for each family member, and the print quality is identical.
Designing your softcover book — the practical details
Resolution: Use images at 300 DPI minimum at the size they'll be printed. Lower resolution files look fine on screen but show visible pixelation on paper. Our design tool flags images that don't meet the minimum before you submit.
The gutter margin: Softcover binding has a natural curve where the pages meet the spine. Keep a 0.5-inch inner margin on both pages to protect important content from the curve. Faces, horizon lines, and any text should sit outside this safe zone. Our design tool shows this boundary clearly before you finalise your layout.
Bleed: Extend background images and colour fills 0.125 inches beyond the trim line on all outer edges. This prevents white slivers appearing at the page edge if the cut is slightly off. Images that don't reach the edge don't need bleed.
Spine text: You can add personalised text to the spine once your book reaches the minimum page count for a printable spine surface. Title, date, and volume number are the most common choices — useful for a series of annual family books stored on a shelf.
Sequencing: A good photo book has a narrative arc, not just a collection of images. Chronological ordering works well for events and travel. Thematic ordering lets you make more creative connections. Use full-page hero images to mark significant moments and multi-photo grids to provide context and detail around them.

What's the difference between softcover and layflat?
Softcover has a flexible cover and a traditional adhesive spine — the pages curve slightly toward the spine when open. Layflat uses rigid mounted pages that open completely flat with no gutter. If your images span both pages and need to be uninterrupted, choose layflat. For single-page layouts and most personal projects, softcover is the better value.
How do I keep images away from the spine?
Maintain a 0.5-inch inner margin on both pages. Our design tool marks this zone clearly. Keep faces, text, and important details outside this margin.
